Horses, anyone?

A writing buddy of mine just gave me a heads up about "The Scorpio Races" by Maggie Stiefvater. Anyone read anything by her?

Can't tell you much yet (I'm only a couple chaps in), but "The Scorpio Races" looks like a very well-written YA full of mythical horses and characters that I made a connection with almost immediately. This is a more literary read than my usual boy/girl-saves-the-world adventure. Will tell you more in a few days.

Sigh. Now how am I supposed to get any writing done, when I keep stumbling across books I want to read instead? I'll just call this "researching the competition" and leave it at that!

I finished "Scorpio Races." Not only is it extremely well written, but I'd go so far as to add it to my favorite books list. Wow. Not sure how to describe it. The setting and plot - mythical horses coming up out of the ocean and being ridden in a race along the beach of an island in Europe - have such a wildness ... a rawness. The book was written with dueling points of view - that of Puck, a young girl trying to save her home with race winnings, and Sean, a veteran race winner who would do anything for the ocean horse he rides. When circumstances draw the two together, the Scorpio races are radically changed for the future.
